This week we had the pleasure of histing Jack-Lewis, a work experience student from a local college. He came here to work alongside Brogan, our Marketing Manager, at the start of the week he answered a couple of questions to gauge his initial knowledge about the construction industry.
Brogan: What type of jobs could you get in the building products sector/construction industry?
Jack:
Brogan: What do you know about this industry?
Jack: Nothing
Brogan: Do you know what an architect does?
Jack: They do drawings of blueprints and plan the location of certain aspects of a building to make sure that it is all safe and is suitable
Brogan: Do you know the different sectors in this industry?
Jack: No but I think it is split by the type of product and services.
Throughout the week Brogan had worked with Jack-Lewis and he really settled into a Marketing based role, helping with writing Job Descriptions, creating artwork and creating presentations for clients. On his last day Brogan asked a few questions about his experience and to see how much Jack-Lewis had learned.
Reflections after a week:
Brogan: What have you learnt whilst being here on your work experience?
Jack: What is needed from individuals in a team in terms of contribution and involvement from different members and also what helps a team be more productive which were the working environment and conditions with the surrounding morale and members being effective and disciplined.
Brogan: What were the highlights?
Jack: Being present in the office and being productive but also the involvement in the work as I felt very included, feeling more valued and was very happy with the contribution and also the dominoes.
Brogan: What types of jobs are there in the building materials sector now that you’ve experienced a week here?
Jack:
Brogan: Has being here influenced your career goals?
Jack: Yes, with that I already want to work in an office when older, it has made me become more confident in that choice and this was mostly influenced by the surrounding working environment.
Brogan: What skills or knowledge do you think are essentials for a career in this industry?
Jack:
Jack-Lewis’ progress is a testament to the importance of practical experience and dedicated mentorship. We look forward to seeing where his journey takes him next and welcome him back in April to get stuck in with some Recruitment.
